FBI Warns of Multitude of COVID-19 Cyber Threats
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently issued a public service announcement outlining a variety of ways that cybercriminals are exploiting the increased use of the internet resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The crisis has forced millions to turn to virtual options for conducting business, shopping, and education, and cybercriminals are taking advantage of this increase in new users and devices to steal information and target businesses and individuals for financial gain using a variety of methods reviewed in the announcement.
The announcement states, “As of March 30, 2020, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received and reviewed more than 1,200 complaints related to COVID-19 scams. In recent weeks, cyber actors have engaged in phishing campaigns against first responders, launched DDoS attacks against government agencies, deployed ransomware at medical facilities, and created fake COVID-19 websites that quietly download malware to victim devices.”
