Cyber Florida is thrilled to announce Florida’s first-ever statewide high school cybersecurity competition: CyberLaunch! The CyberLaunch program aims to introduce high school students to the universe of cybersecurity careers through the fun of a statewide competition. The program includes resources for teachers and students who are new to cybersecurity, including classroom activities that provide a sneak peek of the competition platform for practice! Through this endeavor, we hope to build interest in cybersecurity careers, awareness of cybersecurity best practices, and help connect the cybersecurity industry in Florida with local school districts.

How It Will Work

  • Now: A faculty/staff advisor from the school signs up using the Interest Form.
  • Fall 2023: Cyber Florida’s Operation K12 Program provides free resources to help faculty and students learn and prepare.
  • Winter 2023/4: Cyber Florida hosts a round of hybrid in-person/remote regional activities to introduce students to the competition and the platform (dates to be arranged with faculty advisors.)
  • March 1, 2024: Interested schools attend the state championship event in Orlando! This event will be a one-day conference for students and their faculty advisors, including exhibitors, speakers, and more!

Eligibility & Guidelines

  • Any high school (grades 9-12) in Florida may participate, public or private. There is no cost for participation.
  • Each school must designate at least one faculty/staff representation to help manage participation for their school (via the Interest Form).
  • Students can compete in teams of one to three people, and high schools may have multiple teams.
  • Schools may apply for travel grants to cover the cost of travel to the championship event in Orlando. More information on applying for travel funds will be announced soon.
  • Regional activities are optional and non-qualifying; schools do NOT have to host a regional activity to participate in the March event. Likewise, schools may host a regional activity and choose not to participate in the March event.
  • The in-person March 1, 2024, event will have a track for beginners and a track for more experienced students.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes. The goal of this program is to provide access to as many interested students as possible. Therefore, any employee authorized by the school to serve as the faculty advisor may do so regardless of their native subject area. Cyber Florida will provide teacher education skill packs and student education materials to help students and teachers learn more about cyber competitions. Faculty advisors will be asked to host optional activities with interested students (with Cyber Florida’s support) and to facilitate transportation and chaperone needs for the in-person event if your school chooses to attend.

Any Florida high school, including private and charter schools, may participate. Participation is limited to students in grades 9-12. However, travel grants will only be available to public school districts and will be handled at the district level.

No, the competition platform and practice tools are web-based and do not require any software installation. You may have to whitelist the IP address with your district’s IT team, but we can assist with that.
