As Veterans Day approaches, many Americans may be searching for opportunities to give back to those who have served our country by donating to charity. Unfortunately, malicious scammers on the internet are notorious for taking advantage of the honorary day by using communication techniques similar to trusted military nonprofits to mislead prospective donors.

FightCybercrime.org recently released an article discussing the top red flags of a veteran charity scam. According to the article, “Through targeted communications, scammers use names similar to well-known charities and flood their communications with words like “hero,” “sacrifice” and “disabled” to pull on the heartstrings of compassionate Americans. Oftentimes, these fake charities will create targeted lists by searching social media for people who support the military. Other times, these scammers will imitate existing fundraisers or charities around military observances—such as Veterans Day—when the military is top of mind.” 

Collegiate cyber teams: you are invited to register for the Aviation ISAC Student Cyber Challenge! In this challenge, teams of three will research, investigate, and find the solution to an attack on the global aviation network.

Five challenge categories will be offered:
– Digital Forensics
– Web Exploitation
– Binary Exploitation
– Networking
– Cryptography

Prizes will be offered for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

The 6th annual National Cybersecurity Virtual Career Fair, sponsored by the National Cybersecurity Training and Education (NCyTE) Center and the CAE in Cybersecurity Community, is right around the corner! This career fair brings together students, and alumni from over 380 institutions across the nation to connect with employers offering apprenticeships, internships, and full-time employment.

College whitehatters: don’t miss out on the International Cyber League (ICL) Collegiate Cup competition! This competition is unique because unlike conventional competitions, ICL Collegiate Cup does not focus on hacking, basic network security or IT skills, but on cyber defense and incident response skills. For the first time, students will know if they are truly job ready and will be challenged in hyper-realistic attack scenarios that will require the full set of skills they will need on the job. Registration closes October 8, 2022!

Attention Panhandle parents: registration is open for the UWF 2022 GenCyber Summer Camps!

Students will spend a week making new friends and exploring the world of the cybersecurity professional by doing hands-on training just like the pros powered by the Florida Cyber Range. They’ll also get to meet the pros and learn about an exciting career that’s hungry for talent.
